“But They’re So Smart”: Why Everyday Tasks Can Be So Hard for 2e and Level 1 Autistic Kids

If your child can discuss complex subjects, memorize extraordinary amounts of information, or hold conversations that make them seem years older than they are, it can be incredibly confusing when everyday tasks suddenly seem impossible.

Maybe your child can explain the solar system in astonishing detail but needs you beside them to get dressed.

Maybe they read years above grade level but can’t get started on homework.

Maybe they can explain exactly what makes someone a good friend but repeatedly struggle to navigate friendships in real time.

Or maybe they can tell you exactly what they should do when they’re frustrated but just can’t access any of those strategies when they’re actually upset.

Parents of highly intelligent autistic, ADHD, and twice-exceptional children often find themselves asking:

“If my child is this smart, why is this so hard?”

One reason is that intelligence, skill, and Access are not the same thing.

Through the Village of Littles Nervous System Lens™, I look beyond whether a child technically “can” do something and ask a different question:

Under what conditions can this particular child Access the skills they have?

That distinction can completely change how we understand an inconsistent child.

What Does 2e or Twice-Exceptional Mean?

The term twice-exceptional, often abbreviated as 2e, generally describes children who demonstrate giftedness or high ability while also having one or more disabilities or neurodevelopmental differences.

That can include children who are gifted and also have:

Autism
ADHD
Dyslexia or another learning disability
Executive functioning differences
Other disabilities or developmental differences

A child can have exceptional intellectual strengths while simultaneously requiring significant support in other areas.

This can create an extremely uneven developmental profile.

A 10-year-old may have the vocabulary or factual knowledge of a much older child while still struggling significantly with executive functioning, adaptive skills, sensory processing, flexibility, social interpretation, or emotional regulation.

Neither side of that child cancels out the other.

Intelligence doesn’t erase disability.

And:

Needing support doesn’t erase intelligence.

Why Level 1 Autism Can Be Especially Confusing in Highly Intelligent Children

Level 1 autistic children can sometimes appear far more capable than the amount of effort required to maintain that appearance would suggest.

A child may:

Get excellent grades
Use sophisticated language
Have friends
Follow school rules
Participate in extracurricular activities
Speak comfortably with adults
Understand complicated concepts
Demonstrate strong factual memory

And still experience significant difficulty with:

Executive functioning
Transitions
Sensory processing
Unpredictability
Social nuance
Perspective-taking in real time
Task initiation
Flexible thinking
Emotional regulation
Managing multiple demands simultaneously

This is one reason looking only at what a child accomplishes can give us an incomplete picture.

Instead of only asking:

“Can they do it?”

We also need to ask:

“What does it require from them to do it?”

And:

“Under what conditions does their ability to do it change?”

Intelligence Is Not the Same as Executive Functioning

One particularly common source of confusion involves executive functioning.

A child may understand exactly what needs to happen and still struggle to initiate, organize, sequence, shift between, or complete the necessary steps.

Consider the instruction:

“Go upstairs, get dressed, brush your teeth, put your shoes on, and grab your backpack.”

To an adult, this may sound simple.

But completing it can require:

Working memory
Task initiation
Sequencing
Attention shifting
Sensory tolerance
Time awareness
Motor planning
Decision-making
Transitioning between activities
Managing the anticipation of what happens next

Understanding the words isn’t the same thing as successfully coordinating all of those processes.

So when a highly verbal child says, “I can’t,” it’s worth becoming curious about what part is currently difficult rather than using intelligence as proof that the task should be easy.

Skill Gap vs. Access Drop: An Important Distinction

This brings us to one of the distinctions I use within the Village of Littles Nervous System Lens™:

Skill Gap vs. Access Drop:

A Skill Gap means the child hasn’t yet developed or learned the skill sufficiently.

An Access Drop means the skill exists, but the child’s ability to access it has changed under the current conditions.

From the outside, those can look remarkably similar.

Imagine a child who can’t get dressed independently before school.

If we’ve never actually seen that child complete the sequence independently, there may be skills that still need to be explicitly taught or scaffolded.

But suppose that same child independently gets dressed Saturday morning because they’re excited to go somewhere they love.

Now we have important new information.

The question becomes:

What’s different between Saturday morning and Monday morning?

Look at the Conditions, Not Just the Behavior

Maybe Saturday includes:

More sleep
Less time pressure
Greater autonomy
Something motivating waiting afterward
Fewer transitions
Less sensory Load
No school anticipation

Monday might include:

Poor sleep
Time pressure
Multiple instructions
Uncomfortable clothing
Sibling noise
A transition away from home
An unpredictable school day
Social anxiety
Sensory demands
Executive functioning demands

The skill hasn’t necessarily disappeared.

The conditions changed.

And those changing conditions can affect Access.

This is why simply saying:

“But you did it yesterday!”

doesn’t tell us everything we need to know.

Yesterday is evidence that the skill may exist.

Now we need to understand the Pattern surrounding when that skill is, and isn’t, accessible.

The Village of Littles Nervous System Lens™: Load → Access → Response

This is where I use the Load → Access → Response Map™.

Rather than jumping directly from behavior to intervention, I want us to investigate three things.

1. Load: What Is the Child Carrying?

Load can come from many places simultaneously.

For an autistic, ADHD, or 2e child, nervous system Load might include:

Sensory input
Social complexity
Transitions
Executive functioning demands
Unpredictability
Fatigue
Hunger
Poor sleep
Academic expectations
Communication demands
Masking
Time pressure
Loss of autonomy
Accumulated demands

And Load can stack.

The thing immediately preceding a child’s struggle isn’t necessarily the entire reason for the Response.

The shoes may not actually be about the shoes.

They may simply be where accumulated Load finally becomes visible.

2. Access: Which Skills Become Harder?

Next, look at what happens to the child’s Access.

Perhaps your child still knows how to get dressed.

But as Load increases, you simultaneously notice changes in:

Flexibility
Problem-solving
Working memory
Communication
Task initiation
Perspective-taking
Decision-making
Sensory tolerance
Emotional regulation
Independence

That’s very different information from assuming:

“My child knows better and is choosing not to do it.”

3. Response: What Does This Child Need Under These Conditions?

Only after looking at Load and Access do we choose our Response.

Sometimes the Response might be teaching.

Sometimes scaffolding.

Sometimes reducing language.

Sometimes increasing predictability.

Sometimes changing a sensory component.

Sometimes providing more recovery time.

Sometimes supporting the first step so the child can take over once Access increases.

And yes, sometimes the child simply doesn’t want to do something and an adult still needs to maintain an appropriate boundary.

The Village of Littles Nervous System Lens™ isn’t about explaining every behavior away.

It’s about becoming more precise about what is happening before choosing the Response.

Available, Strained, and Protective: Why the Same Child Can Look So Different

Another important piece of the Village of Littles Nervous System Lens™ is understanding a child’s Pattern across three nervous system states:

Available → Strained → Protective

Available State

When a child is Available, you may see their strongest Access to:

Communication
Flexible thinking
Problem-solving
Independence
Perspective-taking
Executive functioning
Social engagement
Coping skills

This can be the child adults describe as incredibly capable.

Strained State

As Load builds, some skills may become less consistently accessible.

You might notice:

More rigidity
Repetitive questions
Lower frustration tolerance
Increased need for control
Difficulty making decisions
More sensory sensitivity
Greater dependence on an adult
Reduced flexibility
Harder transitions

The child hasn’t become less intelligent.

Their Access is changing.

Protective State

When Load becomes sufficiently high, the child’s nervous system may shift further toward protection.

Depending on the individual child, this could look like:

Meltdown
Shutdown
Aggression
Withdrawal
Refusal
Running away
Loss of functional communication
Extreme rigidity

Again:

Same child. Same intelligence. Different state. Different Access.

“But They Do It at School!”

This discrepancy becomes especially confusing when parents and educators see completely different children.

A teacher may say:

“She does everything independently here.”

Meanwhile, the parent thinks:

“She needs me for EVERYTHING at home.”

Both adults may be accurately describing the child they see.

Rather than deciding that one person is wrong, ask:

What are the conditions surrounding each version of this child?

Perhaps school provides strong structure and predictability.

Perhaps home is where the child feels safe enough to release accumulated stress.

Perhaps the child is masking throughout the school day.

Perhaps executive functioning Load has accumulated by the time they arrive home.

Perhaps different tasks are being required in each environment.

The discrepancy itself is useful information.

Instead of arguing about which version is the “real” child, map the Pattern across environments.

Why Highly Verbal Autistic Children Can Be Overestimated

Language can be particularly misleading.

When a child sounds mature, adults may unconsciously expect maturity across every developmental domain.

But being able to explain something verbally doesn’t necessarily mean the child can execute it under real-world conditions.

A child may be able to explain:

How to calm down
Why hitting is wrong
How to solve a friendship problem
Why homework needs to be completed
What they should do when plans change

while Available.

Then the real situation happens under significant Load.

Suddenly, those beautifully articulated strategies aren’t accessible in the same way.

Being able to describe a skill is not necessarily the same as being able to Access that skill when it’s needed most.

Stop Asking “Why Can’t My Smart Kid Just Do This?”

Try replacing that question with:

Have I actually seen this skill independently?

When is their Access to it strongest?

Under what conditions does it become harder?

What Load is present when Access changes?

Do other skills change at the same time?

What happens when I change my Response?

Those questions give you information.

And information gives you something far more useful than judgment:

a Pattern.

What Parents of 2e Autistic and ADHD Kids Can Do Next

Choose one recurring struggle.

Not everything.

One.

Maybe it’s:

Getting dressed
Brushing teeth
Starting homework
Leaving the house
Turning off a screen
Going to school
Handling sibling conflict
Navigating friendships

Then observe it for several days.

Look at:

The Skill: What exactly am I expecting?

Evidence: Have I actually seen this skill independently?

Available: Under what conditions is this easiest?

Strained: What changes first?

Load: What’s happening when the task becomes difficult?

Access: What other skills become harder at the same time?

Response: What happens when I change the support I’m providing?

You may discover that something that appeared completely unpredictable has a surprisingly consistent Pattern.

Intelligence and Support Needs Can Exist Together

Highly intelligent autistic and ADHD children don’t need adults to ignore their strengths.

And they don’t need their strengths used as evidence that their struggles aren’t real.

They need us to hold both truths simultaneously.

Your child may be extraordinarily intelligent.

And need substantial support.

Your child may possess a skill.

And not have equal Access to it under every condition.

Your child may be incredibly articulate.

And become unable to communicate effectively when overwhelmed.

Your child may be capable of extraordinary things.

And find ordinary things extraordinarily difficult.

Those aren’t contradictions.

They’re information about the child in front of you.

Intelligence doesn’t erase disability.

Needing support doesn’t erase intelligence.

Same child. Same intelligence. Different conditions. Different state. Different Access.
